The Lakers, who have travelled abroad for the first time since 1991 to promote the US’ National Basketball Association game to the UK, had two competitive work-outs at the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre on Saturday and Sunday.

They then headed to Stamford Bridge yesterday to see another star athlete, Didier Drogba, at the top of his game in Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Arsenal.

Bryant said: “When I was a kid growing up in Italy, I used to go to Serie A games all the time but my dream was to go to a Premiership game.

“To finally have the opportunity, it’s exciting.”

Slovenian shooting guard, Sasha Vujacic, the boyfriend of Russian tennis player Maria Sharapova, managed to fit in a trip to Upton Park as well, taking his place among supporters in the West Stand for West Ham’s 1-1 draw with Fulham.

He said: “It was fun to be in the middle of the fans. I like the atmosphere of a soccer game. When West Ham scored, they got a little bit excited.”

The LA Lakers, winners of 16 NBA championships, bring their show to the O2 Arena tonight for an exhibition game against Minnesota.
